Terms of Use
What you can expect from this website, what we ask of you, and the limits on what our information can be relied on to do.

About These Terms
This website, risealberni.org, is published by RISE Alberni, a community nonprofit at 4511 Gertrude St, Port Alberni, BC V9Y 6J9. In these terms, RISE, we, us, and our mean RISE Alberni. You means anyone using this site.
By using this site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site.
These terms cover the website. They are not the agreement for any program or service you sign up for. If you enrol in a program, hire a tutor, or come on as a tutor or volunteer, we will agree the terms of that separately with you.
Using This Website
You are welcome to read this site, print pages from it, share links to it, and pass our program information along to anyone who might need it. That is what it is here for.
You agree not to:
- Use the site to break the law or to help someone else break it.
- Send us threatening, harassing, hateful, or deliberately false messages through our forms.
- Submit someone else's personal information without their permission.
- Try to break into, overload, scrape at scale, or interfere with the site or the servers behind it.
- Use our forms to send advertising or bulk messages.
- Copy our content and present it as your own, or use our name or logo to suggest we endorse something we do not.
If you do any of these things we may block your access and, where it is warranted, report it.
The Information Here Is General
We publish information about our programs and about services in the Alberni Valley because it helps people find what they need. It is general information, offered in good faith. It is not professional advice.
Nothing on this site is legal advice, immigration advice, medical advice, financial advice, or advice from a teacher or counsellor about a specific person. Immigration and settlement questions in particular depend on facts we do not know about your situation, and the rules change. Please talk to a qualified professional before you make a decision that matters.
We try to keep this site accurate and current, and we correct things when we learn they are wrong. Even so, we cannot promise everything here is complete, current, or free of errors. If something looks wrong, tell us at info@risealberni.org and we will look at it.
Reaching out to us through this site does not create a professional relationship of any kind between us.
Our Resource Directory and Links to Other Sites
Our resource directory lists services run by other organizations: housing, food, health, legal help, employment, and more. We list them to save you the search.
Listing an organization is not an endorsement, a recommendation, or a guarantee. We do not run these services, we do not control them, and we cannot vouch for their quality, their availability, their eligibility rules, or their fees. Hours change, programs close, and phone numbers get reassigned. Please confirm the details with the organization before you rely on them.
The same goes for every outside link on this site. Once you follow a link you have left our website and you are subject to that site's own terms and privacy policy. We are not responsible for their content or their practices.
If a listing is out of date or wrong, please tell us. We would rather hear it than leave it up.
Programs, Schedules, and Fees
Program descriptions, class times, locations, eligibility, and prices on this site are current at the time we publish them and can change. Programs depend on funding, staffing, and enrolment, and any of those can shift.
Nothing on this site is a binding offer. Sending us an inquiry form is not enrolment and does not reserve you a place. A place is confirmed when we confirm it with you directly.
Where we publish a price, such as the tutoring session rate, that price applies to the period we say it does and is subject to the terms we agree with you when you sign up. Where we describe a program as free, we mean there is no charge from us.
We do not process payments on this website. Any payment or gift is arranged with us directly.
Tutoring
Our tutoring service is delivered by tutors we screen and match to students. We stand behind how we run the service, and we take responsibility for our own conduct in delivering it.
What we cannot do is guarantee an academic outcome. Tutoring supports a student; it does not promise a grade, a test result, a placement, or an admission. Progress depends on the student, the schedule they keep, and a lot of things outside a tutor's control.
Scheduling, cancellation, payment, and how a match ends are set out in the agreement we make with you at intake, not on this page.
Applying to Work or Volunteer With Us
Job and volunteer postings on this site describe positions as we understand them at the time of posting. They can change or be withdrawn, and a posting is not an offer of work.
Submitting an application does not create an employment or contract relationship. It starts a conversation. Where a role involves working with children or youth, we screen candidates, which may include references and a criminal record check.
What you send us in an application is handled under our Privacy Policy.
Donations and Sponsorships
Our sponsorship pages describe how gifts support our work. The sponsorship form is an inquiry form. It does not take payment and submitting it does not commit you to give.
Gifts are arranged directly with us and arrive by e-transfer or cheque. We will confirm receipt and provide an invoice or receipt for your records. We will tell you plainly what kind of receipt we can issue before you give.
We use gifts for the purpose described where the gift was made, or for the general work of RISE where no purpose was specified. If a specific program cannot proceed, we will contact you before redirecting a gift made for it.
Content: Ours and Yours
Our content
The text, photographs, illustrations, layout, and design on this site belong to RISE Alberni or to the people who licensed them to us, and are protected by Canadian and international copyright law. The RISE Alberni name and logo are our marks.
You may share and reproduce our program and resource information for non-commercial community purposes, as long as you do not change its meaning and you credit RISE Alberni. Anything beyond that, including commercial use or use of our logo, needs our written permission. Just ask.
What you send us
When you send us a message, an application, or an inquiry, you keep ownership of what you wrote. You give us permission to use it for the purpose you sent it for: to answer you, to assess an application, to arrange a service.
You confirm that what you send is yours to send, is accurate as far as you know, and does not infringe anyone else's rights.
We will not publish your story, your photograph, or your name without asking you separately and getting your agreement first.
The Site Is Provided As Is
We provide this website as it is and as it happens to be available. We do not promise that it will always be online, that it will be free of errors or interruptions, or that it will be free of anything harmful.
To the extent the law allows, we exclude all warranties, conditions, and representations that are not written here, whether they would otherwise be implied by statute, by common law, or by the way things are usually done.
Nothing in this section takes away rights you have under British Columbia consumer protection law that cannot be waived.
Limits on Our Responsibility
We are a small nonprofit. These limits let us publish useful information for the community without taking on risk we could not carry.
To the extent the law allows, RISE Alberni and its directors, staff, contractors, and volunteers are not liable for any loss or damage arising from:
- Your use of this website, or your inability to use it.
- Any error, omission, or out-of-date detail in the information published here.
- Anything you did or did not do in reliance on information from this site.
- The content, conduct, availability, or quality of any organization or service we link to or list.
- Any interruption, virus, or security incident affecting the site or the systems that host it.
This applies to indirect, incidental, special, and consequential loss, and to lost data or lost opportunity, whether the claim is framed in contract, in negligence, or any other way, and even if we were told the loss was possible.
Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, our total liability for any claim connected to this website is limited to one hundred Canadian dollars.
None of this limits our responsibility for anything the law does not permit us to limit, including fraud and personal injury caused by our negligence.
Privacy
How we handle personal information is set out in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms. It covers what our forms collect, the analytics this site runs, how to turn that analytics off, and how to ask for a copy of your information or have it deleted.
Changes
We may change, move, or remove any part of this site at any time, including program information and resource listings.
We may also update these terms. The date at the top of the page shows when they last changed. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated version, so it is worth a look if you rely on this site regularly.
If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies.
The Law That Applies
These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the laws of Canada that apply in British Columbia. Any dispute goes to the courts of British Columbia, and you agree those courts have jurisdiction.
This site is intended for people in the Alberni Valley and the surrounding region. We make no claim that its content is appropriate or available anywhere else, and if you use it from elsewhere, complying with your own local law is on you.
