English language classes and one-on-one tutoring for newcomers in Port Alberni, combining language instruction with cultural orientation and practical Canadian life skills.

RISE offers comprehensive English language learning through both group classes and individualized tutoring, designed to meet learners wherever they are on their language journey.

  • English Language Classes

    We offer beginner and intermediate English classes on a weekly basis, available both in-person and online. Our curriculum goes beyond language, integrating cultural orientation, practical Canadian life skills, and citizenship test preparation. For learners who need CLB-aligned or credential-based instruction, we maintain partnerships with organizations offering LINC programs.

  • One-on-One Tutoring

    Learners are matched with volunteer tutors based on individual goals, needs, and availability. Through intake assessments, we pair each person with a tutor whose background best supports their objectives, whether that's employment English, academic writing, or foundational literacy. Sessions are goal-based and adapt to how each person learns, with small group tutoring available when needs align.

Wednesday mornings in person and Thursday afternoons on Zoom, with in-person evening classes coming soon. One-on-one tutoring is scheduled around each learner and tutor's availability.
Location
In-person classes run in the Annex classroom at the Christian Reformed Church, 5033 Roger St, Port Alberni. Thursday sessions are held online over Zoom.
Who It's For
Open to anyone learning English as an additional language. Newcomers and community members are all welcome.
