Signs Your Child Needs a Tutor

One bad test isn't a sign. The same trouble in the same subject, again and again, is.

The Short Answer

How Do I Know If My Child Needs a Tutor?

Look for a pattern, not one bad mark. In BC, the clearest signs are the same subject at Emerging on two report cards, a C- or an IE in high school, homework fights over one subject, and a teacher naming the same gap twice. A graduation assessment or a Grade 11 math choice coming up is a reason to start early.

The Report Card

What Should I Look For on the Report Card?

  • Kindergarten to Grade 9: the same subject at Emerging on two report cards in a row. One Emerging is part of learning; BC says it doesn't mean your child is unsuccessful.
  • Grades 10 to 12: a C- (50 to 59%) or an IE. IE means the teacher doesn't have enough work to give a grade yet, and it comes before any F.
  • Any grade: the teacher's comments name the same gap twice. The comments often say more than the level does, because they name the skill that's behind.

Our guide to BC report cards explains Emerging, Developing, Proficient, and Extending in plain words.

At Home

What Are the Signs at Home?

  • Homework in one subject takes much longer than the rest, or ends in tears.
  • Your child says they're “bad at” a subject, or “just not a math person.”
  • They put off one subject until the last minute, every time.
  • They can do the work with you beside them, but not on their own the next day.
  • A younger child guesses at words from the first letter or the picture instead of sounding them out.

Any one of these can be a bad week. Two or more, in the same subject, for a month or longer, is a pattern worth acting on.

Timing

When Is It Worth Starting Before There's a Problem?

A graduation assessment is coming
Numeracy 10 and the Grade 10 and 12 literacy assessments run in November, January, April, and June. Our parent's guide to BC graduation assessments has the 2026-27 dates.
Your child is choosing a Grade 11 math course
Pre-calculus and Foundations lead to different college and university programs. Our math tutoring page lists what UVic and VIU ask for.
The school's reading screening flagged your child
In 2026-27, every BC public school checks reading from Kindergarten to Grade 3. A flag means your child needs reading help sooner. It doesn't mean dyslexia.
Honest Limits

When Isn't a Tutor the Answer?

  • One bad test or one rough week. Wait for the next piece of work before deciding.
  • You haven't talked to the teacher yet. They can tell you which skill is behind, which makes any tutoring more focused.
  • The trouble is in every subject at once. That can point to attention, reading, or something outside school. A tutor helps, but ask the school about learning assistance and an assessment too. Our page on tutoring for ADHD, dyslexia and autism covers what BC schools can do.
Getting Help

What Happens If We Start Tutoring?

At RISE Alberni, you start with an intake conversation about the subject, the grade, and what's hard right now. Your child gets a vetted tutor on a consistent schedule, one-on-one.

Sessions are usually in person in Port Alberni, and online for Tofino and Ucluelet and Bamfield. K-12 sessions are $60, or $55 each when you prepay for two or more.

Call or text, and we'll talk it through.

More Questions

What Parents Ask

Is Developing a sign my child needs a tutor?

Not on its own. BC's Ministry of Education says Developing means a partial understanding and doesn't mean a child is unsuccessful. The stronger sign is the same subject at Emerging or Developing on two report cards, with the same gap in the teacher's comments.

Is a C- a sign my child needs a tutor?

Often, yes. In Grades 10 to 12, a C- is 50 to 59%, the lowest passing grade. In math and science, a C- in one course usually means gaps that make the next course harder.

Can a tutor help if my child might have ADHD or dyslexia?

Yes, and you don't need a diagnosis to start. A tutor doesn't replace an assessment, though. Ask the school about learning assistance and an IEP too.

How much does a tutor cost in Port Alberni?

K-12 tutoring at RISE Alberni is $60 a session, or $55 each when you prepay for two or more.
